Coach x Step Up: Volunteers Lead Professional Style and Confidence Workshops for Teens!

Active listening, asking great questions, confident body language and eye contact are as important for a teen applying for college or her first job as they are for creating a welcoming atmosphere for our customers in Coach stores. With that in mind, our Global Customer Experience team partnered with Step Up to translate retail training concepts into teen-ready sessions.

Who better to mentor Step Up girls than our Store Managers and Associates? Over several Saturdays in April, Coach employees in Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles volunteered to lead workshops on “The Guide to Professional Style” and “Projecting Confidence.”

“The Guide to Professional Style” focused on how to present yourself for an interview. The Step Up teens tried their hands at several style challenges and had one-on-one time with their mentors to exchange ideas and hear “blooper” stories about outfit choices that didn’t go as planned.

The girls also learned about “Projecting Confidence,” from the ins-and-outs of introductions to handshakes and making a great first impression. After cringing alongside their mentors while watching examples of bad interviews, the teens offered thoughtful reflections about the daily moments they can find to hone specific aspects of their own self-presentation. Step Up teens also practiced answering the question “Tell me about yourself” in a focused and friendly way.

The workshops were an inspiration to Step Up teens and Coach employees alike. Thinking back on the sessions, one of our Coach Outlet managers summed up the sentiments of many, “I thought I was there to inspire, but I ended up being inspired by their candor, thirst for knowledge and courage.”

In 2016, the Coach Foundation made a $3 million pledge to Step Up, a national nonprofit organization that propels girls from under-resourced communities to fulfill their potential. Coach employees regularly volunteer as mentors to the girls as they progress through Step Up’s four-year curriculum.
